DEATH TOLL MOUNTS: Scores Killed, Injured, and Missing in Yelewata Attack by Suspected Fulani Herdsmen
Scores of residents were killed and property destroyed in a coordinated assault by suspected armed herdsmen on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The attackers invaded the town in the early hours of the day, splitting into three groups to penetrate Yelewata from multiple directions.
According to residents, the invaders opened fire in turns to confuse and divide local security efforts. Despite attempts by youths and police personnel to resist, they were overwhelmed by the attackers' numbers and tactical approach. The third group of attackers targeted shops where many residents were sleeping, spraying fuel on doors before setting buildings ablaze. Victims were reportedly burnt alive alongside farm produce and stored food items.
Comrade Joseph Apahar Joo, Media and Publicity Officer for the Internally Displaced Persons unit in Benue State, revealed that those who tried to escape were chased and killed, while others couldn't come out due to the fire. The attack has left the community traumatized, with many still missing and others injured.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that suspected bandits invaded Yelewata and engaged tactical teams in a fierce exchange, resulting in lives lost and injuries. The command is actively pursuing the perpetrators.
Reports indicate varying death tolls, ranging from dozens to over 200 feared dead, with many injured and properties destroyed. The attack on Yelewata is part of a series of violent incidents in Benue State, highlighting the need for increased security measures to protect vulnerable communities.
