DEATH TOLL MOUNTS: Suspected Herdsmen Attacks in Makurdi Local Government Area Result in At Least 25 Deaths
Terror has returned to parts of North-Central Nigeria, specifically in Nasarawa State, where suspected herdsmen launched a deadly assault on Tse Yange, a Tiv-dominated settlement in Obi Local Government Area. The attack occurred late Sunday night, with the attackers riding into the village on motorbikes under the cover of darkness, killing the traditional head of the community and abducting several residents.
Local sources report that the gunmen stormed the quiet agrarian village without warning, unleashing gunfire and chaos that stretched into the early hours of Monday. The number of those abducted or injured in the attack is still unconfirmed, as authorities have yet to release an official statement.
This latest incident adds to a string of deadly attacks linked to suspected herdsmen in recent days. Over the weekend, more than 100 people were feared dead after armed men invaded Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The coordinated violence began on Friday night and continued through the early hours of Saturday.
In the past 48 hours, two other communities, Mtswenem and Akondotyough Bawa in Makurdi Local Government Area, were attacked, resulting in at least 25 deaths. Yelwata, one of the hardest-hit areas, is located on the volatile border between Nasarawa and Benue states and is less than a 40-minute drive from Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The attacks have left residents in fear, with many calling for increased security measures to protect their communities. The lack of official statements from authorities has added to the uncertainty and anxiety, leaving many to wonder when the next attack will occur.
Local residents have appealed to security agencies and the Nasarawa State Government to intervene swiftly and prevent further violence in the area. The situation remains tense, with many residents displaced and homes destroyed. The attacks highlight the ongoing conflict between herders and local communities in the region, which has resulted in significant loss of life and property.
